1. You are board-certified in both internal medicine and dermatology.

What made you choose dermatology as your specialty?

I received my medical degree from the University of Michigan then completed a 3-year Internal Medicine residency at the University of Michigan health system. I then completed a residency in Dermatology at Rush University Medical Center. My training in Internal Medicine provided me with the expertise in diagnosing a wide variety of complex medical diseases that commonly affect patients across multiple organ systems. While the skin is the largest organ system, it is important to remember that it is not a stand-alone organ. There are many skin disorders that reflect our overall health internally, such as psoriasis or vitiligo; my background in Internal Medicine provided me with the critical eye to approach each patient comprehensively with that in mind.

2. What do you enjoy best about practicing at Oak Dermatology?

What I enjoy most about Oak Dermatology is that the entire team aims to do the best for patients every day. We work collectively as a team to provide quality and comprehensive dermatological care and value a patient-centered approach.

3. What skin concerns do you commonly see?

As a dermatologist, I am trained in the recognition and treatment of more than 3,000 disorders involving the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes. I see a wide variety of dermatologic conditions including acne, rosacea, hair loss, and various inflammatory and infectious rashes. I also screen patients for skin cancer and evaluate new, changing, benign, and cancerous growths on the skin.

4. What is a common misconception about skincare?

One misconception about skincare is that one size fits all. Patients have different skin types and various skin ailments that require a customized approach to ensure optimal treatment success. Developing an individualized treatment plan, while considering a patient’s underlying medical history or previous treatment successes and failures, is very important to achieve one’s skincare goals.

5. What activities do you enjoy outside of work?

Outside of work I enjoy traveling and spending time with my family. I enjoy cooking and exploring new cuisines.

6. What advice would you give to patients looking to improve their skin’s health?

First, I recommend every patient take a proactive approach to minimize their risk of premature skin aging and skin cancer by practicing sun safety. This includes seeking shade from the sun’s harmful UV rays during peak hours, wearing sun-protective clothing, and applying sunscreen to any exposed areas of the skin regularly. Not only does this decrease one’s risk of developing melanoma, squamous cell skin cancer, and basal cell skin cancer, but it keeps your skin looking young and healthy. Secondly, I encourage patients to consult with a dermatologist for any specific skin disease or ailment they have, instead of trying to self-diagnose and self-treat. This will allow your doctor to counsel you on the cause and any specific triggers of your skin condition. A huge component of treatment is avoiding disease triggers.

7. What is your go-to skincare product?

RetrinAL 0.1 Intensive Cream. This is a gentle retinoid that can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, skin tone, and overall texture. It is a gentle formulation that can be tolerated by most patients who are looking to incorporate a retinoid into their skincare routine.
