What Is Psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a common auto-immune disorder that causes inflammation of the skin and within the body, affecting over 7 million people in the U.S. This skin condition can appear as raised, itchy, scaly plaques on the skin. Psoriasis can appear anywhere on the body, but is commonly found on the scalp, elbows, knees, arms, legs, and trunk. It can also occur on the hands and feet. Psoriasis affects men and women equally and usually develops between the ages of 15 and 25.

Inflammation caused by psoriasis can impact other parts of the body. Those with psoriasis can also develop psoriatic arthritis. Psoriatic arthritis symptoms typically include pain and stiffness in joints and surrounding areas. Diagnosing psoriatic arthritis early is key to avoiding extensive or permanent joint damage.

Why Do I Have Psoriasis?

While the specific cause of psoriasis is unknown, it is known that there is immune system involvement, which results in increased skin cell growth. For those with psoriasis, skin cells turn over faster than they shed, causing them to pile up on the skin’s surface. Genetics also plays a role in this skin condition; if a relative has psoriasis, you are more likely to develop it.

Can Psoriasis be Cured?

While there is no cure for psoriasis, there are a wide variety of treatment options available. At Oak Dermatology, your provider will create a custom treatment plan to treat your psoriasis. Psoriasis can be mistaken for other common skin rashes so it's important to see a dermatologist if you present with any of the previously mentioned symptoms. Treatment options may include one or a combination of therapies:

  1. Topical Medicines
  2. Biologics (medicines that safely regulate the immune system)
  3. Oral Treatments

While psoriasis can be frustrating, seeing a dermatologist for a personalized treatment plan is the best way to prevent the condition from progressing. If you or someone you know is affected by this skin condition, we are here to help! The skin experts at Oak Dermatology can evaluate your skin and develop a custom approach to treat your psoriasis.
