1. Why did you choose dermatology as your specialty?

Initially, I intended to practice Family Medicine, following in my oldest brother’s footsteps. He suggested training in dermatology as a medical student, which changed my career path. The training for Family Practice physicians is broad and doesn’t always allow for properly treating the myriad skin diseases.

I saw firsthand that undiagnosed “rashes” by non-dermatologists were often diagnosed within split seconds of dermatologists by simply laying their eyes on the patient. Oftentimes, these diagnoses were life-changing and lifesaving. This is often referred to as “skin signs of internal disease.” Like many things in life, you may not know what you are really looking at if you do not know what you are looking for.

I saw how skin diseases have a tremendous impact on the quality of life both physically and emotionally. Skin problems affect the young, old, male, and female. I have practiced dermatology for over 30 years and could not have been happier with my decision!

 2. You have been a dermatologist for over 30 years. What changes have you seen in the dermatology field throughout your career?

The development of immunotherapy has been game-changing. These therapies have made a huge impact in cases of skin cancer such as melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and other forms of skin cancer. Additionally, advances in treating severe psoriasis and eczema have been tremendously impactful for dermatologists and patients.

3. What do you enjoy most about practicing at Oak Dermatology?

Oak Dermatology has a team of highly trained dermatologists, each having their own areas of specific interest and specialization. For conditions that are complex, rare, or unusual, we can take advantage of this very wide knowledge base to come up with solutions for our patients. All members of the Oak Dermatology team love dermatology and the patients who walk through our doors!

4. What activities do you enjoy outside of work?

I spend a large amount of my free time in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with my family, enjoying fishing, kayaking, hiking, and sharpening my lumberjack skills! I also spend a significant amount of time playing guitar.
