1. You were a makeup artist before entering the world of aesthetic dermatology. Why did you decide to change fields?
While working as a makeup artist, I also taught makeup artistry in cosmetology schools and became intrigued by everything that went into being an esthetician; my growing interest led me to get my esthetics license. I’ve learned that when applying makeup, your skin is the canvas -- without a healthy canvas, makeup can only do so much. Don’t get me wrong, I still love makeup, but healthy skin is #1. After getting my esthetics license, I wanted to expand my knowledge of dermatology and aesthetics even further, so I went back to school to get my Medical Assistant certification (CMA). I worked elsewhere as both an esthetician and certified medical assistant. I found that assisting providers with cosmetic procedures, including laser procedures and also with surgeries, such as Mohs skin cancer surgery, helped expand my love for skincare and good skin health. While working in both roles, I realized how much I loved having my own patients, leading me to become a full-time esthetician.
2. What do you find most rewarding in your role as an esthetician?
I love helping my patients devise a personalized skincare routine and achieve their skincare goals. Most skincare routines benefit from both in-office treatments and at-home care. 80-90% of skincare involves at-home care; the other 10-20% involves seeing an esthetician and/or a dermatologist in-office for more intensive treatment. I am here as my patients’ biggest cheerleader!
3. Describe your personal daily skincare routine.
How much time do you have? LOL
Morning Skincare Routine:
Splash of cold water
Apply Alastin Ultra Nourishing Moisturizer and allow to dry.
Apply ColoreScience Face Shield Glow on the face and under the eyes.
Protect lips with Fresh Sugar Lip Balm SPF 15 in Rose.
Evening Skincare Routine:
Finish with Alastin Restorative Eye Treatment, Grande Lash Eyelash Serum, and Fresh Sugar Advanced Therapy Treatment Lip Balm.
4. What is your favorite aesthetic treatment to perform and why?
The Sciton Halo Laser treatment is my favorite to perform. This treatment has a little downtime but the results are completely worth it. The treatment is unique in that it delivers both ablative and non-ablative laser wavelengths to the treatment area. This means we are resurfacing both the top layer of the skin (epidermis) and the living tissue underneath (dermis). This laser treatment helps correct skin issues such as fine lines and wrinkles, discoloration, uneven skin tone, enlarged pores, sun damage, scarring and skin texture. This treatment is safe to use on people of almost all ages, skin types, and complexions. Prior to treatment, we use motion-tracking technology to measure your face, making this treatment truly customized. Downtime includes redness, swelling, bronzing of the skin, peeling, and itching; most of my patients are healed in 5-7 days.
5. What skin concerns do you commonly see?
I see a wide range of skin conditions, including acne breakouts, sun damage, dark spots, scarring, and wrinkles. I’m here to help with each of those concerns, but if I can’t, I work with an amazing group of Dermatologists, Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners who can!
6. Describe some ways patients can improve their skin’s health outside of the dermatology office.
The number one anti-aging product you can use is sunscreen. You can spend all the money in the world on treatments and products, but if you’re frying your skin in the sun daily, they won’t matter. UV exposure is responsible for approximately 80% of visible aging. Always keep an SPF 30+ Broad-spectrum sunscreen with you to touch up your skin every 2 hours. I always recommend ColoreScience Sunforgettable Total Protection Brush-on powder SPF 50. It’s spill-proof, won’t break down in the heat of your car or purse like a liquid SPF, and is water/sweat resistant for up to 80 minutes.
7. What activities do you enjoy outside of work?
When I’m not hanging out with my two boys, ages 8 and 15, I enjoy getting my hands dirty gardening, hiking, and being outdoors. I also love refinishing old furniture and home decor, antiquing, painting, as well as collecting and selling crystals.
